Client & Project

The client is a multinational civil engineering contractor with an enviable reputation for delivering flagship schemes across the globe.

They are currently delivering a £550.M highways scheme in South Wales and require a Senior Buyer to join the purchasing team.

Purpose of Job

As an experienced Buyer within civil engineering, you are responsible for supporting the Commercial and Finance teams to set up new processes which are compatible with our internal and corporate IT systems. You will report to the procurement Manager and assist with the supplier procurement process.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Negotiating and obtaining quotations from suppliers.

Assist in setting up purchase orders using the Company’s approved formats.

Chasing up suppliers for the necessary details and arranging for suppliers to be set up on the Company account system.

Ensuring site delivery requirements are met.

Maintaining, scanning and filing documents on 4Projects.

Assist in reviewing invoices and reconciling invoices with GRN.

Resolving invoice queries and discrepancies with our suppliers and accounts department

Taking stock of stationery and other office essentials, liaising with the various departments and raising requisitions for items that require replenishing.

Reporting on received enquiries and updating templates to enable price comparisons.

Support the Commercial Department in collating records for weekly Plant and Labour returns.

Assist in preparing invoices for payment.

Process Purchase Orders and send to Suppliers.

Responsible for conversion of Purchase Requisitions to Purchase Orders.

Filing and maintenance of Purchase Orders to ensure traceable and auditable.

Ensure health and safety procedures and compliance is adhered to at all times.

Assist with other relevant procurement and commercial duties as required from time to time.


Previous civil engineering procurement experience.

Good organisational skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Commercial awareness.

Excellent attention to detail and inputting data.

Conscientious, flexible and reliable.

Excellent communication skills in order to deliver accurate information.

Effectively prioritise work load in order to meet set deadlines.

Ability to work as part of a team or individually.

Professional, approachable and helpful to ensure smooth running of the general operation.

Confident at dealing with people at all levels both on the telephone and in person.


Minimum of 3 years' purchasing experience in Civils / Infrastructure construction.

Ideally will have knowledge of resources used in the construction industry.

Must be fully computer literate and able to utilise computer technology to access data, maintain records, generate reports, etc.

Relevant academic qualification such as Degree, HND or equivalent
