The business has an exciting opportunity to join the firm working out of Leeds office. This opportunity would suit someone who is operating at Principal or Associate Engineer level and aiming to progress their career. Of particular interest are those who have substantial retail experience, either in design or on site. Previous design experience may not be an issue, as the practical nature of the advice given holds equal importance.

Working as part of the “Northern Retail Group”, you will be client facing and dealing with a wide range of live projects. Working with the Team Leader and other engineers, you will have the opportunity to develop and deliver, coordinated, collaborative and technically excellent design solutions and on-site advice that reflect the clients brief and aspirations.

The Leeds office was established 25 years ago, it is city centre based with commitment to the region. Recent significant local projects include Leeds Trinity Shopping centre, Victoria Gate and New Merrion House and many others, UK wide. This role will be generally based around the North of England but may include national or international work.

The role

The role of Principal / Associate Engineer will include delivery, from both existing and cultivating new clients, encouraging new and repeat business and assisting the regional lead in planning the specialist delivery of multidisciplinary services for the Northern Region.

As the main point of contact for the Northern Retail Group you will have a particular focus on work delivery, organisational support and team growth required to support local and regional clients. You will need to liaise and coordinate with other offices to offer the best solution of both the company and the client. You will need to be able to offer onsite advice and quick turnaround design solution, as well as being able to liaise with tenants / end-users to help them understand the requirements of each site and its restrictions.

Team Leaders are expected to inspire their team in ownership and delivery of their Projects. Team Leaders also demonstrate strong leadership capabilities providing supervision and guidance to team members and other staff. The Teams works cooperatively with other teams to deliver a wide variety of Projects with Team Leaders meeting regularly to discuss workload and other management issues. Team Leaders help, recruit, train and develop their team members and their careers to ensure ongoing succession and growth of the Practice.

Projects span across sectors including Commercial, Industrial, Retail, Educational, Leisure and Health.

What you’ll be doing:

* You will be working on a varied portfolio of projects both in the UK (degree of travel in and out of region will be expected, so mobility is important) and in some cases Internationally.

* Designing engineering systems at the highest level using the latest software design packages.

* You will have the opportunity to lead services design on large projects and take overall lead on small to medium sized projects within the office.

* You will lead and support the development of initial strategic concepts through to design completion for projects ensuring solutions are appropriate for the brief and regulatory standards.

* Take responsibility for solid technical delivery in your work either alone or part of a team.

* Engage with junior support staff in their day-to-day activities and offer advice and guidance to ensure that they develop their skills, and we get the best out of our people.

* You will be financially astute and work with the Team Leader to help monitor fee expenditure, resource and work delivered.

* Creating and maintaining a high reputation within the local industry, and to ensure adherence to QM and risk control procedures is also a very important part of the role.

* Ability to simplify complex MEP systems to aid less technical clients to understand proposals.

* Monitor and comment on tenant fitout information and make sure it complies with client requirements.

* You will be working with specialist groups to offer full solutions for the client.

* You will be building and maintaining client relationships to generate further work.

* You will work in a fast turnaround environment offering onsite solutions for clients.

* You will review tenant proposals and check these against landlord/client requirements.

* You will comment and review contractor submissions for compliance against the employers’ requirements.

* You will be able to size all appropriate tenant incoming services and help feed into the client’s agreement for lease, this will include negotiating with incoming tenants.

Required experience / qualifications

* Ideally but not essentially a degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or Building Services Engineering or equivalent qualification, noting the more practical applied nature of this work, may lead the role towards applicants from a trade or practical background.

* Detailed design experience is preferred but not essential and can be from a consultancy or contractor background.

* You will have experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment, with excellent communication skills with both internal and external clients, and a team-based work approach, you will appreciate that holistic working is central to good design, and you will have experience across a range of projects.

* Good understanding of the secondary engineering discipline.

* Good contractual and commercial knowledge.

* Manage projects to avoid technical and commercial risk.

* IT literate.

* Excellent written and spoken English skills.

* Excellent organisational and planning skills to effectively work to timescales and deadlines.

* Extensive knowledge of contract administration, procurement, and conditions of contract/ appointment.

* Able to develop effective relationships with well-developed interpersonal and influencing skills.

* Proven track record in work winning and building successful teams.

* Ability to simplify complex MEP systems to aid less technical clients to understand proposals.
