Our client, one of the most succesful SME's in the rail industry are growing and they are looking to recruit an Technical & Engineering Director to work closely with the Managing Director and Operations Director.

The business are a private, family owned business with its HQ based centrally within London and an off-site test & build facility in Hertfordshire. The company has grown rapidly in recent years and now employs more than 200 staff with an annual turnover in excess of £40 million. Within the business, staff numbers are relatively evenly split between Design, Telecoms and MEP disciplines.

As part of our ambitious and exciting plans for the future growth of the business, there is a requirement to add an Engineering Director to the senior management team. This role reports to the Managing Director via the Operations Director and holds a seat on the company's Operational Board.

The key components of the role are:

Control, ownership and overall responsibility for all strategic and day to day operational aspects of the Design Department.
Provide strong and consistent leadership and strategy for the construction/infrastructure markets in which they operate.
Assume responsibility for improving the quality of design leadership within the division through team development and motivation of divisional reports and all new hiring.
Management of a team of around 50 staff, including establishing departmental performance criteria, conducting staff annual performance reviews, individual KPI setting and implementing staff development programmes as agreed with the board
Identifying team resourcing requirements by developing an agreed strategic hiring plan. Responsibility for search and recruitment of new hires as agreed with the board.
Working hand in hand with the Operational Team in a matrix format.
Implementing best practice and current knowledge of compliance and process to apply this to the departmental workflow and budgetary requirements of projects.
Involvement with business development and work winning process. Regular engagement with clients both in the pitch process and throughout ongoing projects. Presenting the company's technical capability for D and B and Consultancy to existing and potential new customers and partners.The Ideal Candidate

You will be a dynamic self-starter, capable of working under pressure and to tight deadlines. A seasoned and motivational leader with previous people management experience and a track record of people & team development and recruitment.

Ideally you have 5 to 10 years experience of leadership and management with a design bias within either a large organisation or SME. You are either a qualified designer, design manager or engineer and you are looking for the next step in your career. Experience could have been gained in either a MEP or Civils environment and although desirable, experience of the rail industry is not essential.

Your management style will be one of a highly inclusive and incentivising mentor who can inspire team cohesion and loyalty amongst both senior and junior designers. Highly collaborative with both direct reports and senior management and board.

You are likely to be a good networker with an active and expansive professional network and contacts.
