World Wellbeing Week

This week is World Wellbeing Week. Wellbeing Week is the Mental Health Foundation’s new fundraising initiative. Both mental and physical health are important factors in wellbeing. Held annually during the last week of June, the aim of Wellbeing Week is to provide young people with the overall tools and knowledge required to manage their overall wellbeing. Now in its third year, World Wellbeing Week 2021 takes place on the week beginning 21st June to promote awareness for the wide-ranging aspects of wellbeing, including social, physical, emotional, financial, career, community, and environmental wellbeing and how to take care of each of these factors.

This World Wellbeing Week Plant Planet Careers explore the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and how to implement them into the construction industry workforce. The 5 stages of wellbeing are are:

  • Connect
  • Get Active
  • Be Mindful
  • Keep Learning
  • Give to Others

Connect –

Good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing. There are lots of things you could try to help build stronger and closer relationships. One example of this is to have lunch with a colleague (bare in mind to keep to social distancing measures if required). Simply checking in on team members, asking how someone’s weekend was is another simple way to connect with your team.

Get Active –

This aspect is particularly easy to achieve within the construction industry. The industry itself is known for being physically challenging with long working hours and strenuous manual work. Being physically active can contribute to many aspects of wellbeing. Being physically also has many health benefits, including helping to reduce risk of a heart attack, lower blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Keeping physically also releases endorphins in the brain. Physical activity stimulates the release of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These brain chemicals that are released due to exercise contribute to the feeling of happiness and play an important part in regulating your mood as well as reducing feelings of anxiety.

Mindful –

Ensure you take regular breaks from work, take a seat in a quiet area to give yourself a chance rest and relax, simply having a place to switch off from the workplace stress and take a minute to regroup is important for your wellbeing.

Learning –

Learning new skills not only help increase wellbeing by boosting self-confidence but will also provide you with an opportunity for advancement in your career within the construction industry. (As a side note this industry requires the use of a lot of dangerous tools, so if you want to learn a new skill ensure you are learning from someone with experience and do not attempt something on your own!)

Give –

Research suggests that acts of giving back can help improve your mental wellbeing. This could be offering to help someone you know with DIY or a work project. Giving back, even if it is a small act of kindness, also goes hand in hand with connecting with others.

There is no one solution to keeping up with your wellbeing. This wellbeing week take time for yourself and prioritise not only your physical safety and wellbeing but also your mental wellbeing.
